Training the mind is equally important as training the body. For it is your mind that determines the quality of your life. Happiness doesn’t come from losing 20 pounds; Happiness comes from our sense of self, which is derived from our state of mind.
Physical fitness draws you in completely. Use this time as a form of meditation. Your mental chatter ends as you focus on what you are doing, how you body is moving, and your breath.
By focusing internally, we re-establish the connection between our body and our mind. Fitness becomes an avenue to connect with the root of our essence rather than worrying about our outward appearance. We lose our egos, and feed our souls.
When I first started working out, I thought happiness was elsewhere. I thought that I would be happy when I lost 20 pounds, got the perfect job, had the dream boyfriend, fill in the blank. You understand. Destination addiction they call it...
Eventually, I lost the weight I originally set out to lose when I started my fitness journey, but I still wasn't happy with how I looked. A best friend of mine made me realize that if I was so focused on a goal or a destination, I would miss out on the beautiful journey that it took to get there. Whatever my goal was, when I achieved it, there was another goal there to immediately take its place. I learned that I would never be satisfied if I was always looking for more, more, more. If I was always looking for happiness somewhere else, it would never be where I was. I had to stop looking outside myself and look inward.
I needed to slow down. Smell the roses. I needed to be present and pilates gave me just that. Pilates was the first form of fitness I fell in love with. Pilates, and some mindfulness and meditation, taught me how to look inward. It didn't take me long to realize that fitness had so many benefits beyond the physical. Sure we get an in-shape body, but you learn the true importance of an in-shape mind.
I fell in love with the idea of bringing what I have learned and this new philosophy of mental fitness into peoples lives. The human mind is so powerful and we allow it to have so much control over us. I wanted to share the importance of strengthening the mind and teach people how to develop mental muscles that could rival their physical ones.
Studio DRT is a classic take on Joseph Pilates method of Controlology mixed with my knowledge and background of strength training and my own philosophy of life and training. Through thoughtful movement and introspection, Studio DRT adopts a unique take on fitness that simultaneously works the body and mind in order to develop the muscles required to live a happy, healthy life.
